Zouk Garam Masala and Biryani Masala in the Essential Indian Spice Collection

Garam Masala vs Biryani Masala: What’s the Difference and When Should You Use Each?

Garam masala and biryani masala are not the same thing. Both are aromatic spice blends, but they are designed for different jobs in the kitchen.

What is garam masala?

Zouk Garam Masala is a versatile aromatic blend that can be used across curries, dals, marinades, vegetables and grilled dishes. It is often added towards the later stages of cooking to bring warmth and fragrance.

What is biryani masala?

Zouk Biryani Masala is built specifically around biryani and aromatic rice dishes. Its job is to support the layered flavour of seasoned meat or vegetables, masala and basmati rice.

Can you substitute one for the other?

You can sometimes improvise in home cooking, but the result will not be identical. Garam masala is broader and more general-purpose; biryani masala is more targeted to biryani-style cooking.

Which should you buy?

If you cook lots of curries and dals, garam masala is a strong everyday choice. If biryani is one of your favourite dishes, biryani masala gives you a more direct route to that flavour profile. If you want both, they are included together in our Essential Indian Spice Collection.
